What Is a Torque Converter – And What Does It Do?

The torque converter is a fluid coupling device that sits between your engine and your automatic transmission. Its job is to transfer the rotational power from the engine to the gearbox – smoothly, efficiently, and without requiring a traditional friction clutch. When you brake at a traffic light in an automatic car, the torque converter allows the engine to keep running while the transmission is in gear.

When you accelerate, it multiplies engine torque to give you the pulling power needed to get the vehicle moving.
Inside the torque converter are several key components: the pump (impeller), the turbine, the stator, and the torque converter clutch (also known as the lock-up clutch). Each plays a specific role in managing power transfer – and when any one of them wears or fails, the effects are immediately felt in the way your vehicle drives.

Because the torque converter operates under high heat and constant hydraulic pressure, it is one of the most stressed components in any automatic transmission system. High mileage, infrequent fluid changes and aggressive driving all accelerate wear – making torque converter problems one of the most common automatic transmission faults in Singapore.

Signs Your Torque Converter May Need an Overhaul

Torque converter problems have a distinctive symptom profile. If you recognise any of the following, your torque converter should be professionally assessed before the fault spreads to the wider transmission:

If your vehicle is showing any of these symptoms, contact JPower for a free diagnosis. Addressing a torque converter fault early prevents damage to the transmission fluid, valve body and wider gearbox components – turning what could be a contained repair into a much costlier full transmission overhaul.

Our Torque Converter Overhaul Service

A torque converter overhaul at JPower is a full component rebuild – not a fluid flush or a temporary fix. Our process addresses the root cause of the fault, replaces all worn internal components, and restores the torque converter to factory specification.

Our Overhaul Process

1.

Transmission removal – the gearbox is safely removed to access the torque converter

2.

Torque converter extraction and disassembly – the unit is cut open and fully stripped down

3.

Internal inspection – the pump, turbine, stator, bearings, needle thrust washers and lock-up clutch assembly are inspected for wear, damage and contamination

4.

Lock-up clutch replacement – the torque converter clutch lining is replaced; this is the most commonly worn element and the primary cause of shuddering symptoms

5.

Bearing and thrust washer replacement – all bearings and thrust washers are renewed

6.

Stator one-way clutch inspection – tested and replaced if showing wear or freewheel failure

7.

Sealing, welding and pressure testing – the torque converter housing is resealed, welded shut and pressure tested to verify integrit

8.

Balancing – the rebuilt converter is dynamically balanced to prevent vibration

9.

Transmission fluid change and refitting – fresh fluid is installed and the overhauled converter is refitted

10.

Road testing – the vehicle is road tested to verify smooth power transfer and lock-up clutch engagement

IMPORTANT: Torque converter faults often contaminate the transmission fluid with fine metallic debris. Where this is the case, a full transmission fluid flush and filter service is included as part of the overhaul – ensuring contaminated fluid does not damage the wider transmission system after the converter is rebuilt.

Torque Converter Overhaul vs Full Automatic Transmission Overhaul – Which Do You Need?

A question we are often asked is whether a torque converter overhaul is sufficient, or whether a full automatic transmission overhaul is required. The answer depends on the nature and extent of the internal damage – and the only way to determine this accurately is through a professional diagnostic assessment.

As a general guide:

  • If the fault is isolated to the torque converter – with no evidence of internal transmission damage or valve body faults – a torque converter overhaul may be sufficient to restore full performance.
  • If the torque converter fault has been present for some time and metallic debris has contaminated the transmission fluid, some transmission internal components may have been damaged and a broader overhaul may be required.
  • If the vehicle is showing multiple symptoms – slipping, hesitation, warning lights and torque converter shuddering – the cause may involve both the torque converter and internal transmission wear, requiring a combined overhaul.

At JPower, we always assess the full transmission system before recommending the scope of work. We will never recommend a full overhaul when a torque converter rebuild alone will resolve the issue – and we will always advise you clearly if a broader repair is needed to avoid the problem returning.

If your vehicle requires a full automatic transmission overhaul, visit our Automatic Transmission Overhaul page for details on our complete gearbox rebuild service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a torque converter overhaul?

A torque converter overhaul is a full internal rebuild of the torque converter – the fluid coupling device between your engine and automatic transmission. The process involves disassembling the unit, inspecting and replacing all internal components (including the lock-up clutch, bearings, thrust washers and stator), resealing and welding the housing, balancing the rebuilt unit, and road testing after refitting.

How do I know if my torque converter needs overhauling?

The most distinctive symptom is shuddering or vibration at low to mid speeds – typically between 40 and 70 km/h – as the lock-up clutch attempts to engage. Other signs include slipping under load, transmission overheating, contaminated fluid (dark colour, burnt smell or metallic particles), unusual rattling noises and transmission fault codes. Contact JPower for a free diagnosis if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

Can I continue driving with a faulty torque converter?

We do not recommend it. A failing torque converter produces metallic debris that contaminates the transmission fluid and can damage internal transmission components – turning a contained converter rebuild into a far more expensive full transmission overhaul. The sooner the fault is addressed, the lower the total repair cost is likely to be.

Is a torque converter overhaul the same as a transmission overhaul?

No. A torque converter overhaul addresses the torque converter specifically – a single component. A full automatic transmission overhaul involves the complete removal, disassembly and rebuilding of the entire gearbox, including the torque converter, valve body, clutch packs, solenoids and all internal components. Whether you need one or both depends on the extent of the fault – our team will advise you accurately after diagnosis.

What causes torque converter failure?

The most common causes are high mileage and normal wear of the lock-up clutch lining, infrequent transmission fluid changes leading to degraded hydraulic fluid, overheating from towing or aggressive driving, and in some cases, manufacturing defects in specific vehicle models. PHV and fleet vehicles with high annual mileage are particularly susceptible.

Is transmission fluid included in the overhaul?

Yes. Every JPower torque converter overhaul includes a full transmission fluid change with the correct fluid specification for your vehicle. Where torque converter wear has contaminated the fluid with metallic particles, a full flush is performed to protect the wider transmission system.

Why should I use a ZF Service Partner for a torque converter overhaul?

Vehicles fitted with ZF automatic transmissions require ZF-specific tooling, diagnostic systems and calibration procedures for any transmission work – including torque converter service. As Singapore’s only official ZF Service Partner, JPower is the appropriate choice for these vehicles. For non-ZF vehicles, our 40 years of transmission specialism and in-house overhaul capability make us equally well-equipped.

How long does a torque converter overhaul take?

Turnaround time depends on the vehicle make and model and the extent of the fault. Contact JPower directly for an estimated timeline for your specific vehicle. Fleet operators with scheduling constraints are welcome to discuss timing in advance.
